Danny Steyne - Get Ready

Danny Steyne writes on the Elijah List here. He begins with the words: In November 1989 the Lord told me, If unity will come to the Church, someone has to be willing to be offended first. We see and read so much about unity that it is about time it was put straight.

He later says: This shift was going to cause a tumultuous and disruptive release to The River to flow as God had intended it to! I realized that He was about to cause a shift in the earth that would break open the dams that have locked the free flow of the "Spirit Way" upstream in all the streams that existed. This is Danny's view of unity - a river. Unity is perhaps the biggest item on any dominionist's shopping agenda. Everyone wants to find the trigger which starts something BIG. The fact is, that there is no trigger - there is nothing which we can do which will trip God into action. Why is this?

The first point in answering that question is that God acts independently of man because He is sovereign and man is not. There is simply nothing that we can do in order to flip a revival trigger. Prophecies about a revival have been going on before 1983 and no revival has yet appeared. We are saved only by God's sovereign grace and yet this is never mentioned on the Elijah List. It is also through God's sovereign grace that a revival could one day come - assuming that the Lord does not come first. Even revival is essentially a word invented by man to explain the many occasions when God has apparently broken out and given "revival". Why should a sovereign God react to man's ideas? In fact, for false prophets to announce a coming revival is an absolute guarantee that no revival will appear.

The second point is that revivals in the past were never foretold. They were sovereign acts of God. It is man who has looked at these revivals and tried to analyse them to find the elusive trigger. In every instance in the past, it seems that, it was begun by a person. What triggered that person? Nothing human whatsoever, it was the Holy Spirit.

Thirdly, if unity is the key then what kind of unity is required? Generally unity is called for by such organisations as the Roman Catholic Church. They call for a man-made unity whereby everyone lays down their own notions for a common cause. Let's look at what Jesus himself told his disciples: I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17 vv20b-22. So the requirement for Jesus's disciples and all disciples after them was that they would believe in Jesus. The Apostles message was given on the Day of Pentecost: When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter replied, "Repent and be baptised, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God will call". Acts 2 vv 37-38.

There is a word here missing from the vocabulary of these Elijah List deceivers. Have you noticed it? It is the word repentance. Every revival in the past has been about this one word. Yet, the charismatic revivals (if you can call them revivals) excluded that word altogether. Repentance means turning away from your sins. It means hating your sin nature, which you inherited from Adam (read the first chapters of Genesis) only when this has happened can you be born again. Only when the house is empty will the Holy Spirit occupy it (see Matthew 12 vv43-46). This is the problem with deliverance ministry. It cleans the house but ignores true repentance and since there is no occupation of the Holy Spirit, it is then occupied by even more spirits. In real rebirth there is first repentance and then the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. This means that all problems (real or imagined) such as generational curses, demonic presences, have gone and that person is now a new creature in Christ. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. 2Corinthians 5 vv17-19. Here we have rebirth or new creation. Those born again share a true unity one with another based entirely on the Holy Spirit. Unity is preached but is unattainable by any other means.

Danny Steyne's article does not even touch the surface of Biblical renewal. How many thousands, if not millions, are locked into systems of belief (that is, unbelief) which omits the key element of repentance. Are they true born-again Christians. Have they looked closely at God's Law, in the ten commandments and considered whether they are truly keeping them? The prosperity preachers do not preach repentance. The emergent church does not preach repentance. The seeker sensitive Church does not preach repentance. The Charismatics do not preach repentance. If they don't preach repentance then none of them are actually Christians. That is simply amazing! It is also extremely sad because it means that without rebirth and true faith in Jesus Christ, their destination after death is hell.
