Rick Warren Quotes

Quotes by: Rick Warren of Pastor of Saddleback Church Author of Purpose Driven books.

We rejoice that the Holy Father has captured the world’s attention and so much good will for the Christian faith!…You have written so powerfully, Holy Father, of the importance of a new evangelization within the Church: “An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; it bridges distances, it is willing to abase itself if necessary and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. [19.50 in] It was. They were about 30 bishops from Europe. One of the men had been actually trained and mentored by Jean Vanier, which is an interesting thing because we have a retreat center here and my spiritual director, who grew up at Saddleback, actually went and trained under Jean Vanier too. So I am very excited about that.

[4.45 in] The only reason I play golf is for humility. Everyone needs something in their life that they are not good at, but I did learn an important word, once I started learning golf. It is the word "mulligan" and I like this word. If you don't know that word is it means that in golf when you do a bad shot you get a second chance you get to do another shot and they don't count the first one against you. I like that. What if we had mulligans in every area of life ...[ed: Rick is describing being born again!]

Almighty God, our Father, everything we see, and everything we can't see, exists because of you alone. It all comes from you, it all belongs to you, it all exists for your glory. History is your story. The Scripture tells us, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one." And you are the compassionate and merciful one. And you are loving to everyone you have made. Now today, we rejoice not only in America's peaceful transfer of power for the 44th time, we celebrate a hinge point of history with the inauguration of our first African-American president of the United States. We are so grateful to live in this land, a land of unequaled possibility, where the son of an African immigrant can rise to the highest level of our leadership. And we know today that Dr. King and a great cloud of witnesses are shouting in heaven. Give to our new president, Barack Obama, the wisdom to lead us with humility, the courage to lead us with integrity, the compassion to lead us with generosity. Bless and protect him, his family, Vice President Biden, the Cabinet and every one of our freely elected leaders. Help us, O God, to remember that we are Americans, united not by race or religion or blood, but to our commitment to freedom and justice for all. When we focus on ourselves, when we fight each other, when we forget you, forgive us. When we presume that our greatness and our prosperity is ours alone, forgive us. When we fail to treat our fellow human beings and all the earth with the respect that they deserve, forgive us. And as we face these difficult days ahead, may we have a new birth of clarity in our aims, responsibility in our actions, humility in our approaches and civility in our attitudes – even when we differ. Help us to share, to serve and to seek the common good of all. May all people of good will today join together to work for a more just, a more healthy, and a more prosperous nation and a peaceful planet. And may we never forget that one day, all nations, and all people, will stand accountable before you. We now commit our new president and his wife, Michelle, and his daughters, Malia and Sasha, into your loving care. I humbly ask this in the name of the one who changed my life – Yeshua, Isa, Jesus, [Spanish pronunciation], Jesus - who taught us to pray: [and finishing with the Lord's Prayer]

Every day I get a choice. I can choose to go God’s way or I can choose to go my own way or Satan’s way or if I walk out of this door I don’t know that I blame myself if my choice … because the bottom line is I want what I want what I want. … People ask me what the greatest sin is. I feel the greatest sin is to want to be God: Pride, I want my own way. What it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ - give as much of yourself as you understand to as much of Jesus as you understand at that moment…

If your church has been plateaued for six months, it might take six months to get it going again. If it's been plateaued a year, it might take a year. If it's been plateaued for 20 years, you've got to set in for the duration!
I'm saying some people are going to have to die or leave. Moses had to wander around the desert for 40 years while God killed off a million people before he let them go into the Promised Land. That may be brutally blunt, but it’s true. There may be people in your church who love God sincerely, but who will never, ever change.

So the good life is not about looking good, feeling good, or having the goods. It’s about being good and doing good. The bottom line is that God gets pleasure watching you be you. Why? He made you. And when you do what you are made to do, He goes, ‘That’s my boy.’ ‘That’s my girl.’ You are using the talent and the ability that God gave you. So my advice to you is look at what is in your hand, your identity, your influence, your income. And say, ‘It’s not about me; it’s about making the world a better place. Thank you.

If you want to know what you ought to be doing with your life you need to look at your shape. What am I wired to do? Why would God wire you to do something and then ask you not to do it? If you’re wired to be an anthropologist then you’d be an anthropologist. If you’re wired to be an undersea explorer then you’d be an undersea explorer. If you’re wired to make deals then you’d make deals. If you’re wired to paint then you’d paint. Do you know that God smiles when you be you? When my little kids - when my kids were little – they’re grown up now - have grand kids. I used to sit on the side of their beds and I used to watch my kids. I watched their little bodies rise and lower. Rise and lower and I got joy out of just watching them. Some people have the misguided idea that God only gets excited when you’re doing spiritual things: going to church or whatever; helping the poor; confessing you know; or doing something like that. The bottom line is God gets pleasure watching you. You why? He made you. That’s my boy. That’s my girl. You’re using the power and ability that I gave you. Look at what’s in your hands, your identity, your influence, your income and say: It’s not about me but making the world a better place. Thank God.

You can keep your own religion—Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism—you just need to add Jesus to the equation. Then you become complete. You become a Buddhist with Jesus, a Hindu with Jesus, a Muslim with Jesus and so on. You can throw out the term Christianity and still be a follower of Jesus. In fact, you can throw out the term Christian too. In some countries, you could be persecuted for calling yourself a Christian, and there is no need for that. Just ask Jesus into your heart, you don’t have to identify yourself as a Christian.

Who's the man of peace in any village - or it might be a woman of peace - who has the most respect, they're open and they're influential? They don't have to be a Christian. In fact, they could be a Muslim, but they're open and they're influential and you work with them to attack the five giants [Warren’s global P.E.A.CE plan]. And that's going to bring the second Reformation.

There’s truth in every religion I, I, Christians believe there’s truth in every religion. But we just believe there is one saviour. We believe we can learn truth from, I believe I’ve have learned a lot of truth from different religions. Because they all have a portion of the truth. I just believe there’s one saviour Jesus Christ.

When a human body is out of balance we call that disease.... Likewise, when the body of Christ becomes unbalanced, disease occurs.... Health will occur only when everything is brought back into balance. The task of church leadership is to discover and remove growth-restricting diseases and barriers so that natural, normal growth can occur.
